Ileal bypass for hyperlipidemia.

چکیده
Partial ileal bypass (PIB) is a safe, effective, and lasting therapy for the reduction of lipids and lipoproteins in patients with hyperlipidemia. Following PIB, cireulating plasma and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol fall markedly, while high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol rises. The average plasma cholesterol lowering is 25 % after diet, with a 40 % reduction in the LDL-cholesterol fraction; concurrently, the HDL-cholesterol rises about 8%. These effects have been demonstrated to be maintained for up to 20 years. Currently, PIB is being used in the Program on the Surgical Control of the Hyperlipidemias (POSCH), a randomized controlled clinical trial designed to assess the effects of lipid reduction on mortality and morbidity in a postmyocardial infarction population with arteriographically demonstrated coronary atherosclerosis.

Recurrent pancreatitis after partial ileal bypass for hyperlipidaemia. A case report.
The case of a 28-year-old man with alcohol-induced bouts of recurrent acute pancreatitis after a partial ileal bypass performed for hyperlipidaemia is presented. Serial computed tomography proved valuable for assessing the resolution of the pancreatic mass. Peripheral parenteral hyperalimentation for 6 weeks had a beneficial effect on the course of the pancreatitis and proved to be useful for n...
متن کاملTHERAPY AND PREVENTION HYPERLIPIDEMIA Long-term effects of ileal bypass on lipoproteins in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia
Partial ileal bypass is effective in reducing circulating cholesterol levels. In our study the 10 year effects of the procedure on serum lipids and lipoproteins were studied in 27 patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. The ileal bypass patients were compared with conservatively treated case controls matched for age, sex, serum cholesterol level, relative body weight, blood pr...

متن کاملPartial ileal bypass reduces the production rate of low density lipoproteins in Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbits.
Partial ileal bypass surgery in homozygous Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits resulted in a decrease of low density lipoproteins (LDL)-cholesterol from 14.2 +/- 2.4 to 7.0 +/- 1.2 mmol/l. To investigate the effect of partial ileal bypass on receptor-mediated and receptor-independent LDL catabolism, turnover studies were performed of radiolabeled native LDL and chemically modified ...
متن کاملShort reports Jejuno-ileal bypass, enteric hyperoxaluria, and oxalate nephrosis: a role for polarised light in the renal biopsy
Enteric hyperoxaluria, a complication of jejuno-ileal bypass, is associated with renal failure owing to oxalate nephrosis or tubulo-interstitial nephritis. A 54 year old woman developed renal failure 17 months after jejuno-ileal bypass for morbid obesity. Renal biopsy showed widespread acute on chronic damage to the tubulointerstitial compartment with extensive deposition of oxalate crystals. T...
